Intense Confrontation Unfolds

Upon arrival, officers encountered a shirtless man, later identified as Alejandro Campos Rios, 50, of Buena Park. Rios was wielding a belt and exhibiting bizarre behavior, speaking in both English and Spanish, and at times singing. The officers observed him fighting imaginary foes and behaving in a manner consistent with someone under the influence of drugs. The situation escalated quickly as Rios refused to comply with commands to drop the belt and sit down.

Use of Non-Lethal Force

Efforts to de-escalate the situation proved futile as Rios continued to swing the belt aggressively. Despite deploying a Taser twice with no effect, officers resorted to firing bean bag rounds at Rios in a bid to subdue him. Tragically, one of the rounds penetrated Rios’ chest cavity, causing him to bleed profusely. Despite immediate medical intervention by the officers, Rios succumbed to his injuries.

Investigations Underway

The Fullerton Police Department, along with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Rios’ death. The cause of death is yet to be determined by the Orange County coroner’s office, and toxicology reports to ascertain the presence of drugs in Rios’ system are pending.

Continued Scrutiny

The use of less-lethal force by law enforcement agencies always comes under intense scrutiny, especially in cases where the outcome is tragic. The Fullerton Police Department’s critical incident report and body-worn camera footage will be crucial in shedding light on the events leading to Rios’ untimely demise.

As investigations continue, the community awaits answers and seeks reassurance that incidents like these are thoroughly reviewed to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
