The Arrest of a Fraud Suspect at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport
MILWAUKEE – A man from Mississippi was recently apprehended at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport on March 15, and he now faces a slew of charges related to a fraud conspiracy.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Demarte Winters, allegedly used stolen checks to unlawfully obtain over $90,000 from an unsuspecting victim. Authorities discovered more than 150 checks, amounting to over $240,000, inside a backpack in Winters’ possession.
According to a criminal complaint, a Transportation Security Administration employee alerted authorities about a man attempting to use a counterfeit ID at a security checkpoint. Subsequently, a sheriff’s deputy located Winters on surveillance footage and found him in the airport’s car rental lobby with a suspicious backpack concealed under his leg.
During questioning, Winters initially denied ownership of the backpack and claimed he had given the fake ID to someone else who had already left the airport. However, his story soon unravelled, leading to the discovery of the incriminating evidence inside the bag.
Deputies uncovered a total of 155 checks bearing different names, with a combined value of $243,167.40, stashed inside the backpack. Further investigation revealed that 38 of these checks had been pilfered from U.S. Postal Service mailboxes and utilised in fraudulent transactions. Notably, 13 checks were used to siphon off $91,760.55 from a victim’s account.
Following his arrest, Winters appeared in Milwaukee County Court on Friday, March 29, where his cash bond was set at $50,000.
