Multiple law enforcement agencies, including police in Severance, Eaton, and Ault, were involved in a nearly hour-long pursuit Thursday of a Windsor drive-by shooting suspect. Kyle Bertsch, 39, of Windsor, was taken into custody without incident after his maroon Ford pickup became disabled in a field in unincorporated northern Weld County, according to a news release late Friday afternoon from Windsor police. Bertsch is facing five charges including attempted second-degree murder and possession of weapons by a previous offender, which are both felonies. He was also charged with two counts of menacing, both felonies, and misdemeanors for reckless endangerment and violation of protection order. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including police in Severance, Eaton, and Ault, were involved in a nearly hour-long pursuit on Thursday of a Windsor drive-by shooting suspect. The dramatic chase unfolded in the quiet town of Windsor, located in northern Colorado.
The Incident
The suspect, identified as Kyle Bertsch, 39, of Windsor, was apprehended without incident after his maroon Ford pickup truck came to a halt in a field in unincorporated northern Weld County. Windsor police released a statement late Friday afternoon detailing the events that transpired.
Bertsch now faces a total of five charges, including attempted second-degree murder and possession of weapons by a previous offender, both of which are classified as felonies. Additionally, he has been charged with two counts of menacing, also felonies, as well as misdemeanours for reckless endangerment and violation of a protection order.
At approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday, Windsor police responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 block of Gyrfalcon Court in east Windsor. Witnesses recounted seeing an individual in a pickup truck firing multiple rounds at a building in the vicinity. The vehicle was later tracked down to Bertsch, as confirmed by Windsor police officials.
The Aftermath
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. However, the building and several vehicles sustained minor damage from the gunfire.
Following the initial shooting, at 3:39 p.m., two motorists driving near the Intersand America Corporation building on Weld County Road 23 near Eastman Park Drive reported a male brandishing a firearm at them. The man was identified as driving a similar pickup truck to the one involved in the Gyrfalcon Court incident.
Windsor police swiftly issued alerts to the public, warning of Bertsch’s dangerous nature. A pursuit ensued, during which several law enforcement vehicles sustained damage. Severance police officers eventually sighted Bertsch and initiated the pursuit after he failed to yield.
Current Status
As of now, Bertsch is being held at the Weld County Jail in Greeley, awaiting arraignment. His bond has been set at $5 million for the charges within Windsor’s jurisdiction. Additionally, he is held on bond in connection with cases from other law enforcement agencies.
