In a heartbreaking turn of events, a passerby lost his life in a shootout between police and armed muggers near the Ayub Goth river in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth area. The incident occurred on Saturday, adding to the grim toll of 48 lives lost to street robberies in the city this year.

Police Action Leads to Tragic Consequences

According to Shahzad Ilyas, the Station House Officer at Sohrab Goth police station, the confrontation ensued when two armed muggers attempted to escape on a motorcycle after committing a robbery in Ayub Goth. A police patrol spotted the suspects and tried to apprehend them, triggering the robbers to open fire indiscriminately. Tragically, an innocent passerby named Kanchi was struck by a bullet and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Arrest Made Amidst Chaos

Local residents rallied with the police to chase down the fleeing suspects. Following a brief pursuit, the suspects were cornered again, leading to another exchange of gunfire. One of the suspects, identified as Naseem Abdul Ghafoor, sustained injuries during the crossfire and was subsequently arrested. Police recovered two pistols and a motorcycle from his possession, while the other suspect managed to evade capture on foot.

Grieving Family Seeks Justice

The deceased, Kanchi, was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination before being handed over to his family. Heartbroken, Kanchi’s brother shared that the deceased was a hardworking factory worker who leaves behind a widow, three daughters, and a son. The tragic incident occurred as Kanchi was returning home after a long day at work.
