Law enforcement authorities in SALINE COUNTY are investigating a suspect after an alleged violent attack. A witness reported a domestic disturbance at the Roadway Inn in Salina, where a man was seen breaking a car window with a hammer. The victim, a 42-year-old woman from Winfield, reported her former boyfriend, 48-year-old Jay Weigel of Hays, was following her and later demanded she exit the car. Weigel allegedly slashed the victim’s tire and stole her belongings before being arrested by officers. He faces charges for aggravated assault, criminal threat, vehicle burglary, theft, and damage to property. The victim’s car damage and missing items are valued at over $1,100.

Saline County Incident Under Investigation

Law enforcement authorities in Saline County are currently investigating a suspect after an alleged violent attack that took place in the area.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, the incident occurred just after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Roadway Inn located at 429 West Diamond Drive in Salina. A witness reported a domestic disturbance, with a woman screaming for help.

Feldman stated, “It was reported that a man was breaking out a car window with a hammer, demanding that the 42-year-old victim exit her vehicle. She refused, and he then retrieved a hammer from his vehicle, walked up to her car, and broke the driver’s side window. He was then alleged to have threatened to harm her with the hammer.”

The victim, who hails from Winfield, reported that her former boyfriend, identified as 48-year-old Jay Weigel from Hays, had been following her until she stopped at the Rodeway Inn parking lot.

After the victim exited the car and fled the scene, Weigel reportedly slashed her driver-side tire and stole her cell phone and wallet from the vehicle. The total damage to the car was estimated at $200, while the missing items were valued at over $1,100.

Following the victim’s report, officers began searching for Weigel. He was located early Thursday morning after a Salina resident reported being followed by a suspicious individual in town.

Upon locating the suspect’s vehicle and confirming it was Weigel, officers arrested him without incident in the area of North College Avenue and West Elm Street. Weigel is currently detained on charges including aggravated assault, criminal threats, vehicle burglary, theft, and property damage.
