The disturbing incidents involved three young individuals who tragically lost their lives in separate incidents within a span of just one week in the greater Luweero areas, specifically between March 18 and March 23, 2024. These tragic events have brought to light significant child rights challenges that urgently need to be addressed.

Child Rights Activist’s Concern

Mr Enoch Elly Mawanda, a dedicated child rights activist, expressed his concerns to the Monitor on March 29, emphasizing the need to delve deeper into the child rights trends in the greater Luweero area. He stressed the importance of uncovering any missing links that may exist in these cases of juvenile murders. The Savanna Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Sam Twineamazima, revealed that Patricia Aikolu was lured by a stranger into a nearby bush after being given money to chase a chicken. Her two companions raised the alarm when she failed to return, sparking a frantic search that sadly ended with the discovery of her lifeless body.

Another tragic incident involved the fatal beating of a 15-year-old boy by an adult male who is currently on the run. The victim, Patrick Kibirige, was mercilessly attacked in Kiyenje village in Luweero Town Council on March 23, 2024, and later succumbed to his injuries at Luweero Hospital.

The suspect, identified as Ssenkumba Kiwanuka, allegedly accused Kibirige of theft before subjecting him to a brutal assault. The shocking details of this case have left the community reeling with disbelief.

On March 18, residents of Mpakawero zone in Bombo Town Council, Luweero District, were left in shock after a mother beheaded her own 12-year-old daughter in their rented single room. The gruesome scene unfolded, leaving both investigators and residents stunned by the mother’s incomprehensible actions.

Ms Hajara Nakalembe, a dedicated rights activist, echoed the urgent need for thorough investigations into these tragic incidents. The loss of three young lives in such a short span of time has raised alarm bells and highlighted the pressing need for swift justice.

The 2023 Police annual crime report paints a grim picture, with 100 juvenile murder cases recorded. The data reveals that 65 male juveniles and 35 female juveniles fell victim to violent crimes in 2023, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced child protection measures.
