Police records have revealed that a significant number of individuals are currently facing state charges after participating in a riot in El Paso County. Shockingly, some of these individuals were also federally charged in connection with an illegal entry into the United States on March 21st.
The Incident
On that eventful day, a large group of individuals, believed to be asylum-seekers, dismantled razor wire belonging to the State of Texas. They then proceeded to overwhelm and breach the barrier manned by the outnumbered Texas Army National Guard troops.

Details of Charges
According to court records, individuals such as Omar Alejandro Graterol Colmenares and Jose Guillarte Acosta, both of Venezuelan nationality, were charged with improper entry by an alien. They were briefly held in federal custody before being transferred to state custody for prosecution.
Graterol is currently being held on a $42,000 bond in El Paso County for state charges of riot participation and criminal mischief, while Guillarte faces a $57,000 bond for similar offences.
Legal Proceedings
A search of state court records indicates that seven individuals were indicted for riot participation on March 28, with an additional 50 individuals facing similar charges on March 29.
Queries made to the Texas Department of Public Safety regarding pending charges against other defendants remain unanswered at this time.
Escalation of Events
The incident occurred amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions as hundreds of migrants congregated near the border wall south of El Paso. This coincided with a federal court decision to temporarily suspend Texas’ controversial SB4 law, granting local police the authority to arrest undocumented migrants.
Tempers flared as the large group of migrants tore down the razor wire placed by Texas, attempting to breach the border barrier. In the ensuing chaos, a guardsman was assaulted by a Honduran national, Everisto Benitez Martinez, who allegedly stomped on the guardsman’s knee multiple times.
Security Measures
Following the disturbance, Texas deployed an additional 200 Guard troops to El Paso. They also reinforced the razor wire, considered state property, and are broadcasting warnings in Spanish along the Rio Grande, reminding migrants that illegal entry between ports of entry is prohibited.
