The Fullerton Police Department responded to a call at a restaurant on S. Brookhurst Rd, where two males were reportedly under the influence of drugs. One male, uncooperative with officers, began swinging a belt before being subdued with a taser. Despite further resistance, officers used a less lethal projectile to take the suspect into custody, resulting in a fatal chest injury. The suspect, identified as Alejandro Campos Rios, was pronounced deceased at a local trauma center. In the early hours of March 6, Fullerton Police Officers were called to a restaurant in the 1300 block of S. Brookhurst Rd to deal with a concerning situation. The manager of the establishment had reported two individuals loitering at the front doors, appearing to be under the influence of drugs. With employees scheduled to arrive for work, safety was a top priority.
Upon arrival, officers encountered a shirtless male adult who was uncooperative and began swinging a belt at them. Despite attempts to calm the situation, the suspect’s behavior escalated, prompting the use of a taser. When this proved ineffective, additional officers were called in.
The suspect’s erratic behavior continued, leading to the deployment of a less lethal kinetic energy projectile to subdue him. Unfortunately, during the course of the arrest, the suspect sustained a significant injury to the chest area. Despite officers administering life-saving measures and the arrival of paramedics, the suspect, identified as Alejandro Campos Rios, did not survive. Rios, a 50-year-old resident of Buena Park, tragically lost his life in the incident.
Following standard procedure in Orange County, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rios’s death.
