MUMBAI: A shocking incident occurred late on Friday night near Jai Bharat school in Mulund colony, where a peepal tree suddenly collapsed, injuring two individuals. The tree, located in a private premise of a residential area, showed no visible signs of decay before the unfortunate event. However, upon closer inspection by BMC’s garden department, it was revealed that the tree had decayed from within, leading to its sudden collapse.
The two injured individuals have been identified as Hitesh Saste, aged 30, and Tanvi Kale, aged 28. They were immediately rushed to the BMC-run MT Agarwal hospital and later transferred to Platinum hospital in the locality for further treatment. Kale suffered a fractured leg and had to undergo surgery on Saturday, while Saste sustained a head injury during the incident.
In accordance with the civic body’s policy, an injured person receives Rs. 50,000 in compensation, while the family of a deceased individual is entitled to Rs. 1 lakh if the fallen tree is located on a municipal road. Mumbai, known for its lush greenery, is home to approximately 29.8 lakh trees, with 15.6 lakh of them situated on private premises and the remainder under BMC’s jurisdiction.
