Investigator Mike Theetge, 35, was thrown from the hood of a vehicle in a hit and run and suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed, Sheriff William Schrom said at a press conference. He was initially treated at Guthrie Corning Hospital and was later airlifted to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., where he remained in critical condition.

The incident occurred during a joint retail theft operation between the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police in Consumer Square. A man was observed placing a TV and various items in a shopping cart and exiting past all points of sale around 6:45 p.m.

According to Troop E Commander, Major Miklos S. Szoczei, the suspect was challenged in the vestibule and left all the items behind as he exited the store. A 2016 Chevy Impala tried to pick up the suspect in the rear of the parking lot, leading to a foot chase by Investigator Theetge and a State Police investigator.

During the chase, the suspect slid across the hood of the Impala, and Investigator Theetge reached to grab him but was also thrown onto the hood. The vehicle accelerated, causing both Theetge and the suspect to be ejected. The suspect managed to flee the scene, but was apprehended shortly after. The driver of the Impala, identified as Fatiuna Massaline, remains at large.

Dominick J. Haley, the suspect, was charged with assault of a police officer, second-degree assault, petit larceny, and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in court with bail set at £100,000 cash or £200,000 bond. The driver, Massaline, is expected to face similar charges.

State Police are leading the investigation with assistance from various law enforcement agencies. There is no immediate threat to the public, and anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities.

Theetge, a dedicated member of the Sheriff’s Office for 11 years, has two young sons. Sheriff Schrom expressed his concern for Theetge’s well-being and emphasized the support from the law enforcement community.

“We are anxiously awaiting updates on his condition and wishing him a speedy recovery,” said Schrom. “Mike is highly respected within the agency and our thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time.”
