The recent arrests of nine students during a protest at Stony Brook University (SBU) have raised concerns among faculty members about the policing of student dissent on campus. The students, part of the group SB4PALESTINE, were arrested for refusing to disperse during a peaceful demonstration against the Israel-Gaza conflict. Despite claims of disruptive behavior by campus police, faculty members argue that the arrests infringed upon free speech rights. The incident has sparked calls for an investigation into the university’s handling of protests and the treatment of student activists. Nine students were recently arrested during a protest that took place on March 26 at Stony Brook University (SBU). This incident has sparked concerns among SBU faculty members, who are now calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrests and the handling of student dissent on campus.

Adam French, one of the students who was arrested, stated that the charge brought against them was for “congregating in a public space and refusing to comply with a lawful order of the police to disperse.”

The protest was organised by members of the student group SB4PALESTINE, who were advocating for the university to divest from funds that support Israel. The demonstrators were taken into custody by SBU campus police while participating in a coordinated BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Day of Action that was being held at various SUNY campuses across New York State. The students had gathered in a common hall within the administration building to voice their concerns regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict.

In response to the arrests, a faculty statement was issued the following day during a sit-in organised by students and faculty members. The statement condemned the arrests as an infringement on free speech and peaceful protest. It called for a thorough investigation into the decision-making process that led to the arrests, the campus policies regarding the arrest of peaceful protesters, and the banning of two alumni from campus for their alleged involvement in supporting current students during demonstrations.

A letter sent by Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Rick Gatteau to the campus community on the day of the arrests explained that the protesting students had disrupted activities within the administration building by using a bullhorn, drum, and loud chants. The students were reportedly warned that their actions violated the Code of Student Responsibility and that they would face arrest if they did not disperse.

“While we regret this outcome,” the letter stated, “it is our responsibility to protect the university from disruption and to hold students accountable for behaviour that threatens the safety, security, and operations of the university.”

However, the faculty statement countered these claims by stating that video footage, photographs, and eyewitness accounts from the event depicted the students engaging in a peaceful protest. They argued that the arrests were unwarranted and raised concerns about the use of campus police to suppress dissent.

“The university must carefully consider the long-term implications of the March 26 arrests on campus and how it may discourage peaceful protest and stifle free speech,” the statement read.

Approximately two dozen faculty members joined around 100 students and several local residents at the sit-in held in the same common hall where the arrests had taken place. The presence of campus police officers and Student Affairs staff members added to the tense atmosphere as some of the arrested students confronted the staff for not supporting them during the arrests.

The SB4PALESTINE co-founder, Zubair Kabir, accused university administrators of harassment towards the student group since its formation five months ago. He emphasised the importance of challenging the status quo and creating discomfort to effect meaningful change.

Another member of SB4PALESTINE, Adam French, highlighted the urgency of the Palestinian cause and criticised the university for prioritising individual futures over global injustices. The voices of Palestinian students were also heard, expressing their determination to continue speaking out against oppression.

Dr. Abena Asare, an Associate Professor at SBU, acknowledged the historical significance of student protests on campus and commended current students for educating the administration on important social issues.

SUNY BDS, a coalition advocating for Palestinian liberation, confirmed that Stony Brook University was the only campus to arrest students during the statewide Day of Action. This discrepancy has raised questions about the university’s approach to student activism.

Following the arrests, SB4PALESTINE announced the launch of a new organisation, SBUALUMNI4PALESTINE, to support the arrested students and demand the charges be dropped. A joint protest is scheduled to take place on April 3 at the SBU campus.
