Fullerton Police Department Releases Body Camera Footage of Deadly Encounter

The Fullerton Police Department has recently released new body camera footage that sheds light on the moments leading up to a tragic police encounter that occurred earlier this month. The incident took place in the early morning hours of March 6 at a McDonald’s located at 1341 S. Brookhurst Rd.

Officers Respond to Report of Erratic Behavior

Police officers were dispatched to the fast-food restaurant after receiving a report of two men acting erratically at the entrance, possibly under the influence of drugs. Upon arrival, the officers encountered a shirtless man swinging a belt and speaking incoherently. Despite attempts to get the man to drop the belt, he refused.

Use of Less-Than-Lethal Force

Additional officers were called to the scene, and one officer deployed a stun gun on the man, which had little effect. Subsequently, another officer fired beanbag rounds from a shotgun as a less-than-lethal alternative to traditional ammunition. The man was struck multiple times before finally being subdued by a final shot.

Tragic Outcome

Unfortunately, it was discovered that one of the beanbag rounds had pierced the man’s chest, causing him to bleed and struggle to breathe. Fullerton Fire Department paramedics arrived on the scene and attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Alejandro Campos Rios.

The Fullerton Police Department has released the body camera footage and 911 call recordings in an effort to be transparent with the community.
