The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced this week that Virginia man David Walker, who died in World War II, has been identified. Walker, assigned to the USS California during the Pearl Harbor attack, was one of 103 crewmen who died on the ship. Remains from the ship were recovered and analyzed, leading to Walker’s identification. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in September. Virginia Man Killed in World War II Accounted for
A young man from Norfolk, Virginia, named David Walker, who tragically lost his life during World War II, has finally been identified and accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).
Tragic Loss at Pearl Harbor
David Walker, aged 19, was serving on the USS California battleship when it was attacked and torpedoed during the infamous Pearl Harbor incident. Along with 102 other crewmen, Walker lost his life during the attack. For decades, Walker was one of the many fallen soldiers buried as “Unknowns” in Hawaii cemeteries.
In 2018, the DPAA initiated efforts to exhume the remains of these unknown soldiers for further analysis and identification. Walker’s remains underwent thorough anthropological, dental, and mitochondrial DNA analysis by the DPAA and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System.
Revealing a Hero’s Identity
With the successful identification of David Walker, a rosette will be placed next to his name on the Walls of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His final resting place will be at Arlington National Cemetery in September, where he will be honored and laid to rest with the respect he deserves.
