NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT/Gray News) – A man in North Carolina was taken into custody after his housemate, who had been reported missing, was discovered buried in a shallow grave in their shared backyard.
Details of the Incident in New Hanover County, North Carolina
Elvin Noel Baca, 34, made an appearance in New Hanover County court on Thursday morning, facing charges of first-degree murder and failure to report a death.
The arrest of Baca by the sheriff’s office took place on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Lawrence Grabka, a 69-year-old individual who had been reported missing by a friend, was found to have been buried in the backyard of the residence, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies visited the property for a welfare check, they encountered Baca, Grabka’s housemate.
An acquaintance of Grabka had contacted the authorities after being unable to reach him by phone and discovering that his door was unlocked. Upon entering the residence, the caller located Grabka’s phone and wallet but could not locate him. The fact that Grabka’s belongings were present, yet he was missing, raised suspicions.
Following an investigation, detectives established that Grabka had been killed and buried in a shallow grave in the backyard.
Personal Accounts and Memories Shared by Katherine Roush
Katherine Roush, a close friend of Grabka, described him as a gentle and caring individual. Roush and Grabka had been roommates before Baca moved in.
Roush expressed her concerns about Baca, stating, “I warned him, ‘Get rid of this guy,’ and he was so nice that he didn’t want to kick him out on the street.” She highlighted her unease with Baca and the need for a different individual to rent the room.
Recalling her interactions with Baca, Roush mentioned a particular incident that took place on the evening when she suspected Grabka had already been harmed and buried.
“He was sitting in his car. He said he hadn’t seen him, and he smiled at me and told me he loved me. Yeah, I can’t get that image out of my head,” Roush recounted.
Roush is now attempting to replace this haunting memory with fond recollections of her departed friend.
Court Proceedings and Future Dates
During the court session, Baca was ordered to be held without bond and was assigned to the capital defender’s office.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 18.
Sheriff Edward McMahon expressed his concerns about the case, stating, “The circumstances surrounding this case are deeply concerning, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time; our priority remains seeking justice for the victim.”
