The rescue operation, hindered by rain and darkness, took 12 hours to retrieve all the bodies. Tragic Road Accident Claims Ten Lives in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir

On a fateful day in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir, tragedy struck as a Tavera Taxi carrying nine passengers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, along with the driver from Jammu, met with a horrific accident. The vehicle plunged into a several hundred-feet-deep gorge in the Battery Chasma area of Ramban on the Srinagar Jammu National Highway.

Search and Rescue Operation

The impact of the accident was so severe that the vehicle was completely submerged in the gorge, with only a few parts and a number plate being recovered from the accident spot. Some parts of the vehicle were found in Bisleri Nullah, approximately 1 km away from the crash site, indicating the extent of the tragedy.

Challenges Faced by Rescue Teams

Despite the challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, rescue teams comprising of police, Quick Response Team (QRT), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), army personnel, and local volunteers from Ramban, Ramsu, and Banihal, sprang into action. The rescue operation was delayed initially due to heavy rain and darkness in the steep gorge, but efforts resumed with the first light on Friday.

Identification and Recovery

After an exhaustive 12-hour operation, the rescue teams successfully retrieved all ten bodies from the deep gorge and transferred them to the mortuary of District Hospital Ramban for identification. So far, only two individuals, including the driver, have been identified, while efforts are underway to establish the identity of the remaining deceased passengers.

The tragic incident drew condolences from various quarters, with Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, expressing his sorrow and extending support to the bereaved families.
