A man who was airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital after a brutal assault outside a recovery center in Groton on Monday has tragically passed away, as confirmed by police on Wednesday. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Gerson Chiluisa from Bridgeport, was found unconscious in the parking lot of the Stonington Institute. The suspect, 31-year-old Antwan T. Strickland from Hartford, was swiftly apprehended and charged with first-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Groton Police Department. The cause of death was determined to be “blunt force injury of head,” and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The Tragic Incident at Stonington Institute in Groton
A heartbreaking incident occurred on Monday at the Stonington Institute in Groton, where a man was brutally assaulted in the parking lot of the recovery center. The victim, identified as 46-year-old Gerson Chiluisa from Bridgeport, was found unconscious on the ground by officers who responded to the scene.
Medical Aid and Air Transport to Yale New Haven Hospital
Upon discovering Chiluisa, the first responders at the scene immediately provided him with medical aid until emergency personnel from Groton Ambulance, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, and Yale New Haven medics arrived. Chiluisa was then transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London and later airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven due to serious head injuries.
Tragic Outcome and Suspect Identification
Unfortunately, Chiluisa succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital the following day. An autopsy confirmed that his cause of death was a “blunt force injury of the head,” with the manner of death classified as a homicide. The suspect in this tragic incident was identified as 31-year-old Antwan T. Strickland from Hartford.
Arrest and Charges
Strickland was apprehended in front of a neighboring business on Poquonnock Road and taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently charged with first-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. Strickland is currently being held on a $750,000 bond and was arraigned in New London. The Superior Court will determine any further charges in due course.
