A Michigan murder suspect was apprehended by Akron officers after setting himself on fire in his car. The suspect, wanted in connection to a homicide in Wyandotte, Mich., was spotted by officers heading eastbound on Copley Road. A “high-risk traffic stop” was conducted in the parking lot of A&A Beauty Supply, where officers ordered the suspect to turn off the car and drop the knife he was holding. Despite verbal commands, the suspect set himself on fire while seated in the vehicle. The officers extinguished the flames and the suspect was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment. Akron, Ohio: Michigan Murder Suspect Sets Himself on Fire While Surrounded by Police

In a dramatic turn of events, a Michigan murder suspect was apprehended by Akron police after he set himself on fire in his car while surrounded by officers. The incident took place on Mar. 25 in Akron, Ohio, following alerts from the Flock License Plate Reader regarding a blue Hyundai Tucson wanted in connection to a homicide in Wyandotte, Michigan.

Police Spot the Suspect

According to Akron Police Department Public Information Officer, Capt. Michael Miller, officers spotted the Hyundai Tucson heading eastbound on Copley Road just before 11 a.m. on Mar. 25. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted in the parking lot of A&A Beauty Supply in the 1300 block of Copley Road, where officers cautiously approached the 59-year-old driver identified as the murder suspect.

The Arrest

As officers approached the suspect at gunpoint and verbally commanded him to turn off the car and drop the knife he was holding, the suspect set himself on fire while still seated inside the vehicle. Despite the flames, the suspect managed to exit the car and was promptly taken into custody by the officers.

Emergency Response

Following the arrest, officers used a fire extinguisher to put out the remaining flames inside the vehicle. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were immediately called to the scene to treat the suspect for his burn injuries. He was later transported to Akron Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The entire incident was captured on camera, but the surveillance footage obtained by 19 News was deemed too graphic to share in its entirety. However, viewers can catch a glimpse of the video on 19 News at 3 p.m.

The Akron Police Department has yet to release further details about the suspect or the homicide case from Michigan. The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected to be revealed in the coming days.
