Details of the Ambush in Boise, Idaho

Authorities in Boise, Idaho have recently made several arrests in connection to a violent incident that took place at the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. The incident involved an ambush on two Idaho Department of Correction officers who were preparing to transport an inmate back to prison. The officers were attacked by an unknown suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Nicholas Umphenour.

Arrests Made in Connection to the Incident

Following the ambush, two suspects were arrested after a short vehicle pursuit near the Twin Falls area. Nicholas Umphenour and Skylar Meade were taken into custody separately without any shots fired or extensive use of force. A third suspect, 52-year-old Tonia Huber, was also arrested after a high-speed pursuit through a Twin Falls neighborhood. Huber is accused of harboring the fugitives.

Connection to Idaho Homicides

Police believe that Umphenour and Meade are connected to two Idaho homicides that occurred in the 24-hours prior to the ambush. Detectives are currently investigating the homicides of two men found in Nez Perce County and Clearwater County. Both suspects have ties to the Aryan Knights, an Idaho-based prison gang with white supremacist ideology.

Background of the Inmate

Skylar Meade, the inmate at the center of the ambush, has a history of criminal activity and had been incarcerated since October of 2016 for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with a firearm enhancement. He had engaged in self-injurious behavior prior to the ambush, leading officers to transfer him off-site for care.

Police Response and Investigation

Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar described the ambush as a coordinated attack and planned effort to free Meade from custody. The hospital was placed on lockdown as officers searched for the suspects. Police obtained a $2 million warrant for Umphenour’s arrest on charges of aggravated battery against law enforcement and aiding and abetting an escape.
