The Incident at Walmart in Greeley

Last month, a disturbing incident took place at the Walmart located on 23rd Avenue in Greeley. A man, identified as Jeremy Velazco, found himself in Weld County Jail after threatening a Walmart employee with a knife during an attempt to steal items from the store.

The Confrontation

On the evening of February 28th, police were called to the Walmart after reports of a theft. The asset protection employee at the store revealed that Velazco had pulled a knife on him when questioned about the stolen merchandise. Velazco, aged 35, was caught trying to leave the store with items worth just over $30.

The Threat

Upon being confronted by the employees, Velazco became aggressive and pulled out a knife with a six-inch blade and a green handle from his waistband. He threatened to kill the employee, pressing the blade against the employee’s forearm in a menacing manner. The employee, fearing for his life, backed away and urged Velazco to leave.

Police Intervention

Police arrived on the scene and reviewed security camera footage, confirming the employee’s account of the incident. They observed Velazco concealing items under his coat and brandishing the knife as he made his escape from the store. The employee provided a list of the stolen items, amounting to $31.88.

Previous Encounters

It was revealed that Velazco had previous encounters with Walmart employees and had been trespassed from all Walmart properties before the incident. This raised concerns about his intentions and behaviour during the confrontation at the store.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

The following day, Velazco was apprehended by police while riding a bike in the 1200 block of Ninth Street. He was taken to Weld County Jail and booked on charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and felony menacing with a deadly weapon. Velazco is scheduled for a disposition hearing on April 2 at Weld District Court.
