Guwahati: The Assam Police have detained a fourth-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G) after he allegedly expressed support for and attempted to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The student, identified as Tauseef Ali Farooqui from Delhi’s Okhla area, reportedly pledged his allegiance to the terror group through e-mails and social media posts before disappearing from the institute’s campus.
The incident unfolded when Farooqui’s posts advocating for ISIS began circulating online, prompting authorities to take action. Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Pathak confirmed the student’s detention in Hajo, located approximately 30 km northwest of Guwahati.
Pathak stated, “After receiving the information, we verified the authenticity of the context and initiated an investigation. We contacted the IIT Guwahati authority and identified the accused as Tauseef Ali Farooqui, a Biotechnology student. He was apprehended and brought to the STF office for interrogation.”
Assam Special Task Force (STF) on Saturday evening detained a student of IIT Guwahati for allegedly supporting ISIS.
