Chennai Police Officer Arrested for Illegal Border Crossing into Bangladesh

A police officer from the Selaiyur police station in Chennai, identified as John Selvaraj, has been apprehended by the Bangladesh army for attempting an illegal border crossing into the country. The 47-year-old special sub-inspector (SSI) was on medical leave at the time of his detention, according to police reports.

Investigation into Smuggling Rings

Authorities are currently looking into Selvaraj’s potential involvement in transnational gold and drug smuggling operations. Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of $7500 in cash. It has been noted that Selvaraj has a history of taking unauthorized leaves and had previously been suspended for such actions. Originally hailing from Trichy, Selvaraj began his career as a driver in the Trichy police force before transferring to the Chennai city police and later to Selaiyur.

Background of the Officer

Despite his history of frequent absences, there were no significant red flags regarding Selvaraj’s behaviour, as mentioned by a police official. He had previously been suspended for unauthorized leave, but the suspension was lifted after he issued a formal apology.

Additional information provided by an officer who worked with Selvaraj in Trichy revealed that he served as a police vehicle driver from 2004 to 2009. He then took a ten-year break from service, during which he resided in Singapore. However, he was later reinstated and eventually rose to the rank of SSI, being posted in the Tambaram commissionerate. Currently residing in Madipakkam, Selvaraj’s wife and daughter live separately. Senior police officials have reached out to Bangladeshi authorities for further details on the matter.
