BENGALURU: In a tragic turn of events, a 19-year-old student from National Law School of India University (NLSIU) took his own life by jumping in front of a Metro train at Attiguppe station on Thursday. The young man, identified as Dhruv Jatin Thakkar, was a first-year student from Mumbai. The authorities are still investigating the reasons behind this heartbreaking incident.

The incident led to a temporary disruption in Namma Metro services between Magadi Road and Challaghatta on the Purple Line for two hours. According to officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the teen entered the platform area around 2:10 pm and jumped onto the tracks, tragically ending his life by throwing himself under an approaching train.

Following this incident, there has been a growing demand for the installation of platform screen doors at Metro stations to prevent such tragedies and accidental falls. The demand for increased safety measures has been fueled by the shocking loss of lives due to similar incidents in the past.

In response to the demand for platform screen doors, Maheshwara Rao, the MD of BMRCL, assured the public that measures are already being taken to install screen doors in upcoming Metro stations. Harish Kumar, a regular commuter on Namma Metro, expressed his concern saying, “It is alarming that BMRCL has not yet installed platform screen doors despite repeated incidents. Passenger safety should be a top priority, and immediate action should be taken to prevent such tragic incidents.”

After a suicide attempt earlier this year at Jalahalli station, BMRCL started installing railings on busy platforms at Kempegowda station. However, the completion of these safety measures is still pending on all platforms at the station.
