Man Arrested After Stealing Police Vehicle and Leading High-Speed Chase in Southern Indiana

Located in the heart of Scottsburg, Indiana, the I-65 Studio Suites Hotel near Exit 29 became the scene of a dramatic incident in the early hours of Thursday morning. An Austin man, identified as Roger Stamper, found himself in hot water after stealing a police car and embarking on a high-speed chase that spanned several miles in southern Indiana.

Stolen Police Vehicle Leads to High-Speed Pursuit

The Scottsburg City Police Department was responding to an unrelated call at the hotel when they discovered that a male individual had managed to gain access to one of their patrol cars in the parking lot. Without hesitation, the suspect drove off in the stolen vehicle, setting off a chain of events that would soon unfold into a high-speed pursuit on the I-65 highway.

Multi-Agency Response

As the stolen police car sped southbound on I-65, officers from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Sheriff’s Department, and Indiana State Police quickly joined the pursuit. Attempts to stop the vehicle were made, including the deployment of stop stick tire deflation devices. Despite sustaining damage to the tires, the driver continued to evade law enforcement at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

Crash and Arrest

The pursuit came to a dramatic end near the 3-mile marker close to Eastern Blvd when the driver lost control of the stolen vehicle and collided with a concrete median barrier. Roger Stamper, 44, exited the car through the passenger side door and was promptly subdued by officers using tasers after he failed to comply with commands. Following medical clearance, Stamper was taken into custody and transported to the Scott County Jail in Scottsburg.
