The incident occurred during a response to a domestic dispute, where Mr. Correa fired a rifle at the officers, injuring one. The officers returned fire, resulting in Mr. Correa’s death. Identified: Decedent and Officers Involved in Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Hamilton Township

TRENTON – The Attorney General’s Office has officially identified the decedent and the officers involved in a fatal police-involved shooting that took place on March 8, 2024, in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. The decedent has been named as Vincent Correa, a 44-year-old resident of Hamilton.

The officers from the Hamilton Township Police Department who discharged their service weapons at Mr. Correa were Officer Derek Fiabane and Officer Paul Piromalli.

According to the initial investigation, uniformed officers of the Hamilton Township Police Department responded to a residence on Orchard Avenue in Hamilton Township, N.J. at approximately 10:07 p.m. in response to a 911 call regarding a domestic dispute. During the encounter, Mr. Correa fired a rifle at the officers. One officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was later transported to a hospital with non-fatal injuries. In response, the officers returned fire, resulting in the fatal injury of Mr. Correa. A rifle and a handgun were recovered from Mr. Correa’s person. Officers and emergency medical personnel provided first aid to Mr. Correa, who was pronounced deceased at the scene at 10:38 p.m.

This investigation is being conducted in accordance with Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which mandates that the Attorney General’s Office oversee the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacity or while the individual is in custody. The directive establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further information is being released at this time.


Update on Injured Officer

On March 15, 2024, the Hamilton Police Department issued an update on the officer who was injured during the police-involved shooting incident:

Hamilton Chief of Police, Kenneth R. DeBoskey, is pleased to announce that the officer injured during last week’s police-involved shooting incident is recovering well and has been discharged from the hospital. We extend our gratitude to all the other agencies for their assistance and support. We also want to thank the community for their overwhelming support during this time. The investigation is ongoing and being handled by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. Any inquiries can be directed to their office.
