According to Captain Jake Becchina of the Kansas City Police Department, the Nissan Versa came to a stop in the middle lane of the highway near 103rd Street.

Tragically, a white Kansas City Fire Department Ford Explorer rear-ended the Nissan, causing a chain reaction that involved a white Freightliner semitractor-trailer. Orlando Ward was pronounced dead at the scene, while Muneer Henderson was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The drivers of the Nissan and the Ford Explorer suffered serious injuries and were also hospitalized.
