Tragic Incident Unfolds in Flint, Michigan

FLINT, MI – The suspect in the shooting death of Timothy Kildee, the brother of U.S. Congressman Dan Kildee, is expected to be arraigned Thursday from his hospital bed at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, officials said.

Prosecutors on Wednesday, March 20, authorized a 16-count warrant including single felony counts of felony murder, carjacking, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, first-degree home invasion, interfering with electronic communications, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, six counts of felony firearm and a single misdemeanor charge of assault and battery.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said the 27-year-old suspect was unable to be arraigned Wednesday because of medical procedures; however, he expects him to be arraigned Thursday morning.

The suspect was previously identified as the son of the victim; however, MLive/The Flint Journal is not identifying him because he has yet to be arraigned.

Authorities provided details about the incident at a Tuesday news conference. They said the shooting was prefaced by a domestic incident in Burton. Afterward, the suspect was being driven to Timothy Kildee’s home by his mother.

While in transit, the suspect jumped out of the woman’s vehicle. She contacted Kildee and the parents sought their son.

A witness in the Kildee home said they heard Kildee and the suspect arguing, including a shouting match involving the suspect allegedly saying, “Give me your wallet and key.” The wallet was later found on the suspect, Swanson said.

The witness told police they heard one shot, which left Kildee dead.

Swanson said the suspect drove Kildee’s vehicle from the scene and crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Bray and Stanley roads in Genesee Township.

The occupants of the other vehicle involved had minor injuries. The suspect was seriously injured and was taken to Hurley Medical Center where he is under guard.
