Tragic Incident in Vijayapura District
Twenty-six days after giving birth to twins, a woman tragically lost her life in Karnataka’s Vijayapura district due to medical negligence. The incident took place at the district government hospital where Sharada Doddamani, a resident of Dadamatti village in Babaleshwar taluk, underwent a fatal error in blood transfusion.
Medical Error Leads to Tragic Outcome
Sharada, who belonged to the A+ve blood group, was mistakenly administered a unit of B+ve blood following the birth of her male and female children on February 23. The incorrect blood transfusion led to severe complications, resulting in profuse bleeding and a rapid deterioration of her health.
Urgent Transfer to BLDE Hospital
With her condition rapidly worsening, Sharada was immediately transferred to the BLDE Hospital, a private facility in Vijayapura. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, her renal functioning was severely impacted by the medical error. Meanwhile, her twin children are currently under the care of doctors at the same hospital.
Family Alleges Staff Negligence
Following Sharada’s tragic death, her family has lodged a formal complaint with the health department, citing staff negligence as the cause of the fatal error. District surgeon Dr Shivanand Mastiholi conducted an internal investigation, which revealed the involvement of nurses Surekha, Laxmi, Savita, and blood bank lab technician Veerappa Jambagi in the medical error.
Further Inquiry and Accountability
Dr Mastiholi has recommended an inquiry against Dr Prema Nayak, the doctor on duty at the time of the fatal blood transfusion error. The district health department is expected to investigate the matter thoroughly to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Conclusion
The tragic loss of Sharada Doddamani highlights the importance of stringent protocols and procedures in medical facilities to prevent such devastating errors. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical role that healthcare professionals play in ensuring patient safety and well-being.
