Body Found in Tijuana River Channel Identified as Homicide Victim

In a tragic incident that shook the community, the San Diego Police Department announced on Wednesday that one of the two bodies found floating in the Tijuana River Channel in late February has been identified as a victim of homicide. The victim, a 36-year-old man from Mexico named Rodolfo Agosto Castillo-Ancona, had sustained trauma to his upper body, indicating foul play.

The second man found in the river channel had no obvious signs of injury that suggested he was the victim of a crime. Although he has been identified, his name is being withheld pending family notifications and further examination by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The bodies were discovered on February 22 by SDPD officers who had been alerted by the U.S. Border Patrol about a possible body floating in the channel next to the 3000 block of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro. The area, a large flood plain, had experienced heavy rain in recent weeks, leading to challenging search conditions.

Due to poor lighting, strong water flow, vegetation, and debris in the river, officers from the Southern Division were initially unable to locate a body. However, they returned the next day with the assistance of a Border Patrol helicopter and located two bodies in the channel near a large pile of debris.

After consulting with officials from the San Diego Fire Department River Rescue Team, both bodies were recovered from the river. It remains unclear whether the deaths of the two males are connected or if they ended up in the same location due to the recent heavy rains and strong currents in the river.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the deaths to come forward. The SDPD Homicide Unit can be reached at 619-531-2293, or tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
