Police Investigation and Charges
Upon receiving a report of an unresponsive infant on February 2, 2022, officers and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service rushed to the scene. Despite efforts to save her, Layla was pronounced dead days later at the hospital. Subsequent autopsy and toxicology reports confirmed that her death was a result of exposure to the dangerous substances.
In a shocking turn of events, the parents of the infant, Christopher Joseph Mattern and Alison Kimberly Muise, have been charged with failure to provide the necessaries of life. Both individuals were arrested by the police and are currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
