Rankin County Teen Arrested for Alleged Matricide and Patricide

A 14-year-old girl has been taken into custody by Rankin County deputies for the alleged murder of her mother and the attempted murder of her stepfather in a shooting incident that took place in Brandon, Mississippi. The tragic events unfolded at approximately 5:07 p.m. on Tuesday evening in the 200 block of Ashton Way.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey confirmed in a press release that deputies responded to a call reporting a shooting at the residence. Upon arrival, they encountered the male homeowner, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The man informed deputies that upon returning home, he discovered his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

The male homeowner revealed that his 14-year-old stepdaughter was armed with a pistol and had shot him in the shoulder. He managed to disarm the teenager, who then fled the scene by jumping over a fence into the backyard. Additional deputies and the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s helicopter were dispatched to assist in the search.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., the 14-year-old suspect was apprehended by Rankin County deputies not far from the residence and taken into custody without incident. The teenager has been charged with murder and attempted murder and is now being held at the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.
