PRAYAGRAJ: A tragic incident unfolded in the Satti Chaura locality under the limits of Mutthiganj police station, where an elderly couple was burnt alive after the family members of a newly married woman allegedly torched their house following the suicide of the woman on Monday night.
The deceased in-laws, Rajendra Kesarwani (64) and his wife Shobha Devi (62), residents of Satti Chaura, fell victim to the heinous act. The series of events began when a 21-year-old woman, Anshika Kesarwani, wife of Anshu, took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house. The tragedy struck the neighborhood, leading to a confrontation between the family members of the deceased woman and her husband’s family.
DCP (city) Deepak Bhuker stated that the police were alerted to the situation around 11 pm on Monday night. Upon arriving at the scene, they found both groups engaged in a heated argument. The situation escalated when the family members of the deceased woman allegedly set fire to the house of the husband. In a daring rescue operation, the police managed to extricate five individuals from the burning house by breaking through the shutter.

Firefighters were swiftly summoned to the scene and successfully extinguished the flames within two hours. It was not until around 3 am that a joint team of police and fire brigade discovered the charred bodies of Rajendra Kesarwani and Shobha Devi inside the house. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem examination.
Following the tragic incident, senior police officials and forensic experts conducted a thorough investigation of the scene. The family members of the deceased woman informed the police that she had been subjected to mistreatment by her husband and in-laws, leading to her decision to take her own life.
Anshika had been married to Anshu Kesarwani in February 2023. The family’s allegations of abuse and mistreatment have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s suicide.
