Recent reports from the United States have brought forth some heartbreaking news. A young student, 20-year-old Abhijeeth Paruchuru, has tragically passed away in Boston. However, investigations have indicated that there was no foul play involved in his untimely demise.

Who was Abhijeeth Paruchuru?

Abhijeeth Paruchuru hailed from Burripalem, Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, India. He had ventured to the United States to pursue his engineering studies at Boston University. The only son of Paruchuru Chakradhar and Srilakshmi, he was described as a bright and promising student since his childhood. Despite initial reservations from his mother about him studying abroad, she eventually acquiesced, prioritizing his future.

Tragic Discovery

The somber news of Paruchuru’s demise surfaced on 11 March when he was found lifeless in Boston. Initially, there were speculations of foul play surrounding his death, with some media outlets reporting it as a possible murder. His body was discovered in a car deep within a forest, prompting concerns and questions about the circumstances of his passing.

However, the Consulate General of India in New York later confirmed that investigations had ruled out any foul play in the case. Furthermore, Paruchuru’s parents, who reside in Connecticut, are actively cooperating with detectives as the inquiry progresses.

Indian Consulate’s Involvement

The Indian Consulate in New York has been deeply involved in the matter, providing assistance with documentation and facilitating the repatriation of Paruchuru’s mortal remains back to India. Expressing profound sadness over the loss, the Consulate General of India in New York expressed their condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of Abhijeeth Paruchuru, an Indian student in Boston.”

According to reports from PTI, Paruchuru’s final rites have already been conducted in his hometown of Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. The US-based non-profit organization TEAM Aid played a pivotal role in bringing his body back to India.

Escalating Concerns

The tragic passing of Abhijeeth Paruchuru adds to a series of distressing incidents involving Indian students in the United States. Since the onset of 2024, there have been several alarming cases that have raised concerns within the Indian community.

Series of Tragedies

In March, Amarnath Ghosh, a 34-year-old talented classical dancer from India and a student at Washington University, was fatally shot in St Louis, Missouri. Ghosh had migrated to the US from West Bengal to pursue his passion for dancing but met a tragic end near St. Louis’ Academy and Central West End neighbourhoods.

Similarly, Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian-American student at Purdue University, was discovered deceased in a nature preserve in Indiana earlier this year. The incidents of violence have sparked fears and calls for enhanced safety measures for Indian students in the US.

Community Concerns

The series of unfortunate events involving Indian students in the US prompted officials from the Indian Embassy in Washington and various consulates to engage in a virtual interaction with Indian students across the country. Discussions centered around student welfare and fostering a sense of community among the diaspora in the wake of these tragedies.

Approximately 150 Indian Student Association representatives and students from 90 US universities participated in the interaction led by Charge d’Affaires and Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan, along with Consul Generals from various Indian consulates in the US.

The safety and security of Indian students studying in the US remain a top priority for diplomatic missions and community leaders as they navigate through these challenging times.
