Two individuals lost their lives in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts on Monday. In Balasore district, a 23-year-old engineering student, Ranjan Kumar Paamanik, was tragically killed by a lightning strike while seeking shelter under a thatched house near his shrimp farm in Bhograi block. Despite efforts from nearby farmers to extinguish the fire caused by the lightning strike, Ranjan suffered fatal burn injuries and was declared dead upon arrival at Jaleswarpur community health centre. In a similar incident in Mayurbhanj district, 44-year-old Baidhar Sasad lost his life when he was struck by lightning while attempting to rescue his wife from a thunderstorm at their home in Manik Sahi village. Police have initiated investigations into both cases of unnatural deaths, with ex gratia assistance planned for the victims’ families.

Tragic Lightning Strikes Claim Two Lives in Balasore and Mayurbhanj Districts

On a fateful day in the serene village of Tukurihajira in Bhograi block of Balasore district, a young engineering student met with a tragic end due to a lightning strike. Ranjan Kumar Paamanik, a 23-year-old residing in the quaint village, lost his life while seeking shelter under a thatched house near his shrimp farm. The incident occurred amidst a sudden downpour, leaving Ranjan trapped inside the thatched house as it caught fire from the lightning strike.

Witnessing this heart-wrenching incident, farmers from the nearby areas rushed to the spot to help douse the fire. Despite their efforts, Ranjan suffered fatal burn injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Jaleswarpur community health centre (CHC). The loss of Ranjan, who was the only son of his parents, has left the village in a state of shock and mourning.

Meanwhile, in the serene village of Manik Sahi within Thakurmunda block of Mayurbhanj district, another tragedy struck in the form of a lightning strike. Baidhar Sasad, a 44-year-old resident of the village, lost his life while attempting to rescue his wife from the sudden thunderstorm. As his wife hurriedly returned to their house to avoid the rain, a lightning bolt struck, leaving Baidhar fatally injured.

The loud screams of Baidhar’s wife alerted the villagers to the tragic incident, but it was too late to save him. The local police arrived at the scene to seize the body and initiate the necessary formalities. The loss of Baidhar has left a void in the close-knit community of Manik Sahi, where he was a respected member.

Ex Gratia Promised to the Bereaved Families

Both incidents have left the residents of Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts in a state of shock and sorrow. The authorities have assured that ex gratia will be provided to the bereaved families after the completion of the official formalities. The sudden loss of young Ranjan and the tragic demise of Baidhar have served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural calamities.
