The Challenge of Predicting Heart Disease

Each year, an estimated 1 million adults in the UK experience chest pain, prompting them to seek medical attention. Many of these individuals will undergo a coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) scan to diagnose coronary artery disease, which is often caused by plaques that narrow or block the arteries supplying blood to the heart. Surprisingly, three-quarters of patients undergoing CCTAs show no signs of significant artery narrowing, leading them to be classified as low-risk for heart attacks. However, these “low-risk” patients actually face twice the risk of death or cardiac events compared to high-risk individuals. This increased risk is often due to coronary inflammation, a critical factor not previously detectable in routine CCTAs.
