This heartbreaking incident took place on a fateful Monday, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The Details of the Incident

The victim, identified as Dharmendra Kumar, was a member of an education department team hailing from Varanasi. His team was on a crucial mission to deliver Uttar Pradesh Board examination answer sheets to the SD Inter college located in the vicinity. Superintendent of Police (City) Satyanarain Parjapat revealed that the team was accompanied by another teacher and two support staff members, as well as a police contingent from Varanasi.

Tragedy struck on a quiet Sunday night as the education department and Varanasi police teams awaited the opening of the college gate. An altercation erupted inside the vehicle between Kumar and head constable Chander Prakash, resulting in the fatal shooting of the teacher by the constable using his service weapon.

The injured teacher was immediately rushed to the district hospital, where his untimely demise was confirmed by the SP. Following this tragic event, teachers from various colleges took to the streets in protest, blocking the circular road to express their outrage. They claimed that the constable was under the influence of alcohol and that the dispute arose over a demand for tobacco from the teacher.

In a memorandum addressed to the state government, the protesting teachers demanded a compensation of at least Rs 10 crore for the deceased teacher’s family, along with employment for a family member. They vowed to continue their sit-in until strict action was taken against the perpetrator and sought written assurances from district authorities. Additionally, the teachers initiated a boycott of the evaluation process for UP board exam answer sheets in solidarity with their fallen colleague.

The body of the deceased teacher has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and a case has been filed against the head constable responsible for the fatal shooting. The other individuals present in the vehicle at the time of the incident have been detained for questioning, as per the SP’s statement.
