The Tragic Death of Highly-Talented Lawyer Mitch East in Tamarama

A “highly-talented” lawyer, Mitch East, met a tragic end in the early hours of Sunday morning after being run down by a car in a hit and run incident in Tamarama, Sydney.

The Incident

The 28-year-old Harvard-educated lawyer was found outside a home in Tamarama in Sydney’s east at 4am on Sunday with critical head and chest injuries. It is believed he was the victim of a hit and run just after getting out of a taxi.

According to reports, police are now looking for information about a white Subaru Outback which was seen in the area at the time of the incident. The driver who hit Mr East was urged to come forward by NSW Police inspector Jason Hogan.

Mitch East’s Background

New Zealand-born Mr East was a Harvard Law School graduate who had worked on the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch Terrorist Attack in his homeland. He had recently started working in Sydney in July 2022.

Described as a “talented lawyer”, his employer, Arnold Bloch Leibler, sent an email to all staff expressing their condolences. Managing Partner Henry Lanzer and Managing Sydney Partner Paul Rubenstein described him as “a highly talented lawyer and popular and valued member of the firm, whose loss will be deeply felt”.

Police Investigation

Police have called on anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to come forward. Detective Assistant Superintendent Adam Solah stated that the man’s family were “distraught” at the news.

Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are leading the inquiries, with police having already obtained “extensive” footage from the area. Asst Superintendent Solah mentioned that they do not believe the deceased was on any sort of vehicle, indicating that he may have been a pedestrian at the time of the incident.

Eye-Witness Accounts

A witness told 9 News that they heard a thud and a car alarm go off around the time pedestrians found Mr East lying on the street. A neighbour mentioned waking up to see a blue forensic tent stationed in the middle of Fletcher St.

“I got a bit sick to my stomach seeing this actually,” said Therese Jahnsen, the neighbour. “Just seeing this set up. I’ve never seen this set up before.”

Appeal for Information

Asst Superintendent Solah urged anyone with details about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers. “If you’ve been involved in any way or have information, we want you to contact the police,” he stated.
