In a recent incident in Coimbatore, a lone tusker strayed out of the reserve forest and entered human habitat, leading to a dramatic encounter with a 65-year-old man in Perur. The elephant attack, which was captured on video and went viral on social media, has sparked concern among locals and forest officials.
The male elephant, estimated to be around 13 years old, ventured into a residential area and eventually found its way into a plantain field. Forest department officials quickly mobilized their frontline staff to chase the tusker away from the field. However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the elephant began chasing a man near a pond, ultimately pushing him down and attacking him with its tusk. The victim, identified as Maruthamuthu, sustained minor injuries on his back and was promptly taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, his condition is reported to be stable.
As the elephant crossed the Perur-Siruvani main road, over 1,000 locals gathered in the area, creating a tense atmosphere. Forest department officials urged the public to refrain from making noise or disturbing the animal and cooperated with their efforts to guide the elephant back into the wild. To maintain order, Coimbatore rural police personnel were called in to control the crowd.
R Arun Kumar, forest range officer of the Madukkarai forest range, described the challenges of managing the situation amidst a large and agitated crowd. He emphasized the importance of respecting the wild animal’s space and avoiding any actions that could agitate or provoke it further.

Officials revealed that this same tusker had previously attacked three individuals, including an elderly woman, in Karadimadai village. The elephant’s incursions into residential areas were attributed to its search for food, leading to incidents of raiding rice, millets, and cattle feeds stored in sheds at farmhouses in rural Coimbatore.
Despite efforts to track the elephant as it moved towards Vedapatti and entered a pond in Perur, forest officials lost sight of the animal as darkness fell. Nevertheless, they remained committed to driving the tusker back into the reserve forest by midnight or early Monday morning.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by human-wildlife conflicts and the importance of coexisting peacefully with the natural world. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are working diligently to ensure the safe return of the elephant to its natural habitat.
