Manhunt underway for suspect in fatal shooting of New Mexico state police officer

Authorities in Tucumcari, N.M. are currently conducting a massive search for the individual responsible for the tragic death of New Mexico state police officer Justin Hare. The 35-year-old officer was fatally shot on Interstate 40 in eastern New Mexico, sparking a manhunt that has gripped the community.

The incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning near mile marker 320, approximately 50 miles west of the Texas state line. The state Department of Public Safety has been working tirelessly to track down the suspect, who was last seen on foot wearing a brown hoodie and jacket on the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, around 30 miles west of Tucumcari.

According to KOAT-TV, Officer Hare was conducting a routine welfare check on the interstate when he came across a vehicle pulled over onto the shoulder of the traffic lanes. It was during this encounter that the fatal shooting took place.

In response to the tragic incident, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her condolences, stating, “It’s a tragic reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face each time they put on a uniform and report for duty.”

Cabinet Secretary Jason Bowie also paid tribute to Officer Hare, calling his sacrifice one that should never have been required. “Officer Hare will never be forgotten, and his sacrifice safeguarding our state is worthy of the highest honors,” Bowie remarked.
