DIGHTON Police Sergeant Survives Head-On Collision with Drunk Driver

DIGHTON, Mass. (WPRI) — Sergeant Nick Barros, a seasoned seven-year veteran of the Dighton Police Department, found himself in a life-threatening situation on October 9, 2023.

Barros, who had been responding to a call, was driving his cruiser down Route 44 when he was struck head-on by a drunk driver. The impact of the collision left his cruiser mangled and Barros lucky to be alive.

Reflecting on the terrifying moment, Barros recalled seeing the oncoming car speeding towards him at 70 mph, with the driver drifting into his lane. Despite his efforts to swerve out of the way, the crash was inevitable.

“I just heard a loud boom and I saw white,” Barros said. “I thought I was dead.”

Fortunately, Barros survived the crash, though he sustained serious injuries including broken bones in both hands and burns from the airbag deployment. He continues to experience numbness and tingling in his hands, preventing him from returning to work.

Barros expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from the police department during his recovery and hopes that the incident serves as a wake-up call for the driver responsible, 30-year-old Michelle Sousa. Sousa pleaded guilty to operating under the influence, with her blood alcohol content well above the legal limit.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible decision-making, Barros urged the public to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, encouraging the use of services like Uber or Lyft instead.

“Don’t drink and drive, it’s not worth it. Trust me. Do your part and save a life,” Barros advised.

Barros anticipates returning to work by May, once he has regained full strength in his hands. His message to all is clear: think before getting behind the wheel and prevent unnecessary tragedies.

the latest trends in sustainable fashion.

Sustainable fashion continues to gain momentum as consumers become more conscious of the environmental impact of their clothing choices. From eco-friendly materials to ethical production practices, there are a variety of ways that fashion brands are embracing sustainability in their designs.

One of the biggest trends in sustainable fashion right now is the use of recycled materials. From plastic bottles to old denim, designers are finding creative ways to repurpose waste into new clothing items. This not only reduces the amount of waste going into landfills but also helps to conserve natural resources.

Another trend in sustainable fashion is the rise of circular fashion concepts. This involves designing clothing items with the end of their lifecycle in mind, so that they can be easily recycled or upcycled into new garments. Brands like Patagonia and Eileen Fisher have been leading the way in this area, offering take-back programs for their clothing and turning them into new products.

Ethical production practices are also a key focus for sustainable fashion brands. This means ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for garment workers, as well as minimizing the use of harmful chemicals in the production process. Brands like Everlane and Reformation have been transparent about their supply chains and have made a commitment to ethical sourcing.

In addition to these trends, sustainable fashion is also becoming more inclusive and diverse. Brands are recognizing the importance of offering clothing options for people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. This includes using models of different ethnicities and body types in their marketing campaigns, as well as creating clothing lines that cater to a wider range of customers.

Overall, the future of sustainable fashion looks bright as more and more brands embrace eco-friendly practices and prioritize ethical production. By supporting these brands and making conscious clothing choices, consumers can play a role in reducing the fashion industry’s impact on the planet..
