Mohammed Sheikh of New Birmingham Road, Dudley, Sentenced to 10 Years in Jail for Drug Offences

Mohammed Sheikh, a 28-year-old resident of New Birmingham Road, Dudley, has been handed a 10-year prison term at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday. The sentencing comes after an 18-month long investigation by West Midlands Police into Sheikh and his partner, Sapphire Edwards, culminating in their arrest at Birmingham Airport on May 6 last year as they attempted to board a flight to Cancun, Mexico.

During the arrest, Sheikh was found in possession of a significant amount of cash, wearing expensive designer clothing and jewellery. Further inspection of his suitcase revealed luxury goods and cannabis concealed within a container of moisturising cream.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation into Sheikh and Edwards began in December 2021 when Sheikh was identified as the mastermind behind a County Lines drug operation known as the ‘Sandy’ line. This led to a thorough investigation by local officers in Dudley, who eventually referred their findings to the County Lines Task Force.

Analysis of the operation revealed bulk messages being sent to numerous mobile numbers, a common trait of County Lines operations, advertising drugs for sale under the pseudonym ‘Sandy’. Following a search in June 2022, Sheikh was found to be in possession of a mobile phone containing deleted bulk messages promoting the sale of class A drugs using the same alias.

Continued Operation

A new ‘Sandy Line’ drug line number was identified in December 2022, just days after Sheikh’s search in June. This new line sent daily bulk messages advertising drugs to approximately 300 mobile numbers, many of which were linked to known drug users in Dudley.

Police later discovered a third phone linked to Sheikh, owned by his girlfriend Sapphire Edwards. The phone’s usage and movements were traced back to a Dudley address associated with suspected drug dealing.

Arrest and Sentencing

In March 2023, a search of the Dudley address led to the arrest of Sapphire Edwards after a significant amount of heroin and crack cocaine were found in a bedroom. Edwards was later bailed but further examination of her phone revealed her involvement in drug deals.

On May 6 last year, Sheikh and Edwards were arrested as they attempted to board a flight to Mexico. Subsequent searches of their personal belongings uncovered high-value designer clothes and cannabis with a street value of £2,000. Sheikh later admitted to being involved in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin, while Edwards pleaded guilty to similar charges.

Conclusion

While Sheikh has been sentenced to a 10-year prison term, Edwards, who had no fixed abode, received an 18-month suspended sentence and 120 hours of unpaid work. Detective Constable Phil Langstone from the County Lines Taskforce commented on Sheikh’s operation, stating that he showed little regard for the impact of his drug dealings on others. Detective Sergeant Robert Moir added that Sheikh’s arrest prevented him from enjoying the profits of his illegal activities on a luxury holiday in Mexico.
