Accident – Death – Obituary News : SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility made a significant drug bust, uncovering millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine concealed in a shipment of peppers and husk tomatoes.

The incident took place on Tuesday night when officers encountered a 27-year-old man driving a commercial tractor-trailer at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The man, who possessed a valid border crossing card, claimed to be transporting a load of peppers and husk tomatoes, also known as tomatillos.

Upon further inspection in the secondary examination area, a CBP K-9 unit alerted officers, leading them to thoroughly search the trailer. Inside, a CBP agriculture specialist discovered a box containing a crystal-like substance. Subsequent investigation revealed a total of 3,594 packages from the shipment, all containing methamphetamine.

The methamphetamine weighed a total of 3,671.58 pounds, with a street value estimated to be in the millions of dollars, according to a statement from CBP.

Rosa E. Hernandez, the Port Director for the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, commended the CBP team for their diligent work in counternarcotics operations. She emphasized the importance of the agency’s layered detection capabilities in combating transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities.

As a result of the discovery, both the narcotics and the commercial tractor-trailer were seized, and the driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further action.
