Manhunt underway for suspect in fatal shooting of New Mexico state police officer

Authorities in Tucumcari, New Mexico are currently engaged in a large-scale manhunt for the suspect responsible for the tragic and senseless killing of 35-year-old state police officer Justin Hare. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning on Interstate 40, approximately 50 miles west of the Texas state line. The governor’s office has confirmed the identity of the victim, who was on duty at the time of the shooting.

According to a statement released by the state Department of Public Safety, the suspect was last sighted on foot wearing a brown hoodie and jacket on the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, which is around 30 miles west of Tucumcari. Law enforcement officials have issued a warning that the suspect is considered armed and dangerous, advising the public not to approach him and to immediately contact emergency services by dialing 911.

Local news outlet KOAT-TV reported that Officer Hare had been conducting a routine welfare check on the interstate when he encountered a vehicle pulled over onto the shoulder of the traffic lanes. It was during this encounter that the fatal shooting took place, leaving the law enforcement community and the wider public in shock and mourning.

In response to the tragedy, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her condolences, stating: “It’s a tragic reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face each time they put on a uniform and report for duty.” Cabinet Secretary Jason Bowie echoed these sentiments, describing Officer Hare’s sacrifice as one that should never have had to be made.

“Officer Hare will never be forgotten, and his sacrifice safeguarding our state is worthy of the highest honors,” Bowie added, highlighting the dedication and bravery shown by law enforcement officers in protecting their communities.
