Manhunt underway for suspect in fatal shooting of New Mexico state police officer

TUCUMCARI, N.M. – Authorities are currently engaged in a widespread search for the suspect responsible for the tragic shooting of New Mexico state police officer Justin Hare, 35, on Interstate 40 in eastern New Mexico. The incident took place near mile marker 320, approximately 50 miles west of the Texas state line, early Friday morning.

Law enforcement agencies were alerted to the situation after Officer Hare was shot while performing a routine welfare check on a vehicle pulled over onto the shoulder of the traffic lanes. The suspect, who was last seen on foot wearing a brown hoodie and jacket, was spotted on the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, about 30 miles west of Tucumcari. Authorities have issued a warning that the suspect is armed and dangerous, urging the public to avoid approaching them and instead call 911 immediately.
