Manhunt underway for suspect in fatal shooting of New Mexico state police officer

Authorities are currently conducting a widespread search for the individual responsible for the tragic killing of New Mexico state police officer Justin Hare, aged 35, on Interstate 40 in eastern New Mexico. The incident took place in the early hours of Friday morning near mile marker 320, approximately 80 kilometers west of the Texas state line, as stated by the state Department of Public Safety.

The suspect, who was last seen on foot wearing a brown hoodie and jacket, is considered to be armed and dangerous. Law enforcement officials have urged the public not to approach the individual and to contact 911 immediately if spotted. The suspect was last sighted on the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, around 48 kilometers west of Tucumcari.

According to a report by KOAT-TV, Officer Hare was conducting a welfare check on the interstate when he came across a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the traffic lanes, leading to the fatal shooting.

Expressing her condolences, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham stated, “It’s a tragic reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every time they don their uniform and head out to work.” Cabinet Secretary Jason Bowie also remarked on the sacrifice made by Officer Hare, stating, “His memory will forever be honoured, and his commitment to protecting our state deserves the utmost respect.”
