Arrest Warrant Issued for Marion Man After New Mexico State Police Officer Shot and Killed

NEW MEXICO (WPDE) — An arrest warrant has been issued for a Marion man following the tragic shooting of a New Mexico State Police officer near Tucumcari on Friday morning.

The incident took place at approximately 5:30 a.m. on I-40, where State Police Officer Justin Hare was fatally shot.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jaremy Smith from Marion, is wanted in connection with Officer Hare’s murder, according to New Mexico State Police.

Search for the Suspect

Authorities are now actively searching for Smith, who was last spotted on the I-40 Frontage Road at milepost 304 between Montoya and Newkirk. He was described as wearing blue jeans, a tan Carhartt jacket, and either a red or brown hoodie. Police have warned that Smith is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

New Mexico State Police have issued an arrest warrant for Smith, charging him with the following offences:

• First Degree Murder
• Armed Robbery
• Shooting at or from a Motor Vehicle
• Tampering with Evidence
• Felon in Possession of a Firearm
• Unlawful Taking of a Motor Vehicle
• Criminal Damage to Property
