Sergeant Blocks Highway

A sergeant from the sheriff’s office was in a vehicle blocking Highway 40 at Mary Jane Road in Winter Park around 12:06 p.m. when the silver Jeep Cherokee drove past him, heading eastbound on Highway 40. The sergeant attempted to pull over the Jeep, but the driver refused to stop, leading to a pursuit.

High-Speed Chase

The sheriff’s office reported that the sergeant discontinued the pursuit at the top of Berthoud Pass and alerted other law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the Jeep. Shortly after, the Jeep was involved in a crash on Highway 40 approximately five miles east of the Berthoud Pass Summit at Mile Post 247. The driver, identified as Randy Calvin, 33, fled the scene but was eventually apprehended.

Confrontation with CDOT Plow

During the chase, Calvin collided with a CDOT plow that was attempting to shield other vehicles on the road. This reckless behaviour not only endangered himself but also put the lives of other motorists at risk.

Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin condemned Calvin’s actions, stating, “All too common in today’s society, the rule of law is questioned, which ultimately puts our communities at risk from those who choose to put their own agendas at the forefront over the safety of other citizens. This behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Grand County, where we will continue to enforce the law and arrest those that violate it.”
