Nissan Motor Considers Partnership with Honda Motor for Electric Vehicle Components

Nissan Motor is reportedly exploring the possibility of forming a business partnership with Honda Motor to collaborate on key components for electric vehicles in an effort to reduce production costs. According to sources familiar with the matter at Nissan, the potential partnership with their domestic rival Honda could provide Nissan with the necessary scale to compete effectively against other electric vehicle manufacturers, such as China’s BYD and Tesla.

While discussions between Nissan and Honda have not officially commenced, the sources revealed that the scope of the partnership is yet to be determined. The idea of collaboration between the two companies reportedly originated from discussions between their chief executives.

In addition to key electric vehicle components, Nissan is also considering partnering with Honda on “kei car” production – smaller, less powerful vehicles designed primarily for the domestic market. However, the possibility of extending the partnership to overseas operations could potentially impact Honda’s existing collaboration with General Motors.

Honda, on the other hand, has set ambitious targets for its electric vehicle and fuel cell vehicle sales, aiming to achieve 100% of all sales by 2040. This aligns with Nissan’s existing collaborations, such as their partnership with Renault on electric vehicles in Europe. The upcoming Nissan electric Micra is expected to share the same architecture as the new Renault Five, manufactured in northern France.

Furthermore, Nissan has committed to investing up to 600 million euros ($652.50 million) in Renault’s new electric vehicle entity, Ampere. Despite this, the scope of the alliance between Nissan and Renault has been scaled back in recent years to allow for more agile partnerships, with Renault exploring new collaborations with partners such as China’s Geely.

As the automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles, partnerships between major players like Nissan and Honda could prove vital in driving innovation and cost efficiencies in the sector. While the specifics of the potential partnership are still uncertain, both companies are exploring various possibilities to enhance their competitive positions in the evolving market.
