Tennessee Airman Finally Returns Home After 80 Years

In a heartwarming development, U.S. Army Air Force Staff Sgt. Jackson M. Barbour, a Tennessee Airman who tragically lost his life in World War II, has finally been identified and will be returning home after more than 80 years. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recently announced that Barbour, who hailed from Memphis, Tennessee, was accounted for on September 22, 2023, bringing closure to his family after decades of uncertainty.

The Tragic Incident

Barbour was just 19 years old when he lost his life while serving as a crew member on the B-17F “Flying Fortress”, known as the Danellen. The plane was struck by anti-aircraft fire after a bombing raid on a German aircraft factory at Romilly-sur-Seine, France, and tragically crashed near the village of Bernières-sur-Seine. Despite the valiant efforts of the crew, only one airman managed to parachute to safety, while Barbour and the other eight crew members perished in the crash.

A Long-Awaited Homecoming

For years, Barbour’s remains remained unaccounted for until recent advancements in DNA technology allowed for his identification. Following a thorough analysis by DPAA scientists and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, Barbour’s remains were positively identified, bringing a sense of closure to his family and loved ones.

Barbour will be laid to rest in his hometown of Memphis, with a special rosette being placed next to his name on the Wall of the Missing at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. This gesture serves as a poignant reminder of his sacrifice and ultimate return home.
