Traders in Wuse Market, Abuja, Express Anguish Over Police Barricade

Thousands of traders and artisans in Wuse market, Abuja, have expressed deep sorrow over the halt in their means of livelihood due to a barricade by police operatives. The traders also mourned the loss of their colleague, whom they described as innocent.

The market, which is usually bustling with activity, was eerily quiet as heavily armed police officers, led by a female Area Commander, enforced the barricade and denied shop owners access following a recent altercation. Reporters were granted access into the market, revealing the tense atmosphere that had gripped the area.

The tension escalated after a hawker was shot by officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service on Tuesday, sparking a protest by angry youths and resulting in parts of the market being set ablaze. The aftermath of the chaos was evident with burnt-out and vandalized cars still scattered across the market.

Police Response and Investigations

Responding to the incident, SP Jospehine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, stated that the Commissioner of Police personally led a team of operatives to restore order following the civil unrest. Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting victim, Ibrahim Yahaya, had been apprehended by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board and was taken before a mobile court in Wuse Market where he was convicted.

Adeh continued, “The suspect, alongside others, attempted to escape while being conveyed to prison, leading to a confrontation where he was shot by corrections personnel. This unfortunate event incited some individuals to set ablaze vehicles and shops in the vicinity.”

Market Traders Speak Out

Despite the official account, traders in the market have vehemently maintained that their deceased colleague was innocent. Danladi, a trader, described Yahaya as a hardworking man who sought his livelihood honestly. Another trader, Hamisu, asserted that the market unrest was fueled by the unjust killing of Yahaya.

The officer responsible for the shooting has been taken into custody as investigations continue. The Commissioner of Police FCT has urged residents to resume their lawful activities peacefully.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragic events, the traders in Wuse Market are left mourning the loss of a fellow vendor and grappling with the uncertainty of their disrupted livelihoods.
