Man Arrested for High-Tech ATM Card Fraud in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: A man hailing from Haryana has been apprehended by city police for orchestrating a sophisticated ATM card fraud scheme, resulting in the theft of over Rs 1.66 lakh. The accused, identified as Ashad Ali, and his accomplices employed a novel method by tampering with the microprocessor chip of the integrated circuit in the ATM cards.

According to the police investigation, Ali and his associates affixed a ‘remote-controlled device’ to the ATM machine, causing customers’ cards to become stuck. Furthermore, they deceptively displayed their own mobile numbers as helpline contacts in the ATM kiosk. The criminal activity came to light when Chinmaya Kumar Sarangi, an accountant at the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Chandaka, reported to the Cyber Crime and Economic Offences police station that Rs 1.66 lakh had been siphoned from his account through ten unauthorized transactions.

Sarangi recounted that he retrieved his ATM card after contacting the helpline number provided, only to discover that his funds had been drained on the same day. Subsequent investigation uncovered that one of the gang members was inside the Axis Bank ATM kiosk at Fire Station Square, while another posed as a helpline representative, luring Sarangi outside under the pretext of poor network connectivity affecting the call quality.

Once outside, the fraudster inside the kiosk swiftly ejected Sarangi’s card and replaced its chip with that of another stolen card. Ali then reinserted the tampered card into the machine. The caller instructed Sarangi to re-enter his PIN inside the kiosk, allowing the criminal on the inside to surreptitiously record the sensitive information. Subsequently, the fraudster remotely ejected Sarangi’s compromised card after the PIN was entered, completing the illicit transaction.
